Registration of diabetic patients
Who can be registered?
Newly diagnosed diabetic patients fulfilling following criteria:
- under age 40 at diagnosis
- ALL types of diabetes = type 1, type 2, unclassifiable forms, secondary diabetes, gestational diabetes
- preferentially within 1 week and no later than 18 months after diagnosis
- residing in Belgium at least 6 months prior to diagnosis
How can I be registered?
The diabetologist/paediatrician registers patients at diagnosis of diabetes. There is an annual follow-up.
The complete list of participating centres is found under "Participating physicians".
What does registration imply?
- information about BDR
- written informed consent
- a blood sample for specialised tests such as diabetes-associated antibodies, genetic markers and hormones.
- filling in a questionnaire
- collected data are treated strictly confidential and stored in a secured database.
Why register?
Registration of diabetic patients is useful for following reasons:
- it allows counting the newly diagnosed patients and to follow trends
- we can determine markers in the blood that could contribute to the treatment
- we can study the evolution of diabetes after diagnosis using these markers
- the results in patients have contributed to prediction of diabetes in first degree relatives of type 1 diabetic patients
- registered patients are the first to be included in studies aiming at slowing down diabetes and beta cell transplantation
